Marshall, MN Area Guide
Welcome to the rolling hills of Marshall, Minnesota! Located in the southwestern region of the state at the heart of Lyon County, this prolific agricultural center is the home of the world-famous Schwan Food Delivery Service and has also grown to include incredible industrial innovations including Exon’s Wind Energy initiative!
History
Prior to the founding of Marshall in 1872 by the Winona & St. Peter Railroad Company, the area around Lake Marshall was used as an occasional campsite before being noticed for its agricultural value.
James J. Manton decided after much deliberation to name the township after Minnesota Governor William R. Marshall.
The town continued to grow explosively leading up to the dawn of the 20th Century, with newspapers, post offices, and school houses springing up almost immediately. Less than one year since its inception, the town included nearly eighty permanent structures.
This prolific growth contributed to the incorporation of the village in 1876 and later establishment of it as a city in 1902. During the intervening years, Marshall’s population had increased by nearly fifteen-hundred percent!
The turn of the century saw the explosive trend of growth in Marshall continue, with churches, schools, and hospitals being constructed. Around 1950, Marvin Schwan converted his dairy farm into an ice cream home delivery service which subsequently bloomed into Schwan Food Company, a nationally recognized brand and vendor.
Disastrous flooding in the 1940’s and 50’s spurned the construction of diversion canals to help protect homes and spare the beloved city from calamitous damage. This project was continued in 1997 by a large-scale project to remove sediment and embark upon a massive improvement plan completed later in the year 2000. Despite notably high moisture marks in the subsequent seasons, these projects have kept the surrounding rivers below their banks.
